You mean to say the life of eric garner was worth $6 million ?? A guy whose "career" was selling individual cigarettes??!! If he was white, the family wouldn't have gotten a thing.

New York City reached a settlement with the family of Eric Garner on Monday, agreeing to pay $5.9 million to resolve a wrongful death claim over his killing by the police on Staten Island last July, a lawyer for the family said.

The agreement, reached just a few days before the deadline to file suit, headed off one potentially fractious legal battle over Mr. Garner’s death even as a federal inquiry into the killing and several others at the state and local level remain open and could provide a further accounting of how he died.

Still, the settlement was a pivotal moment in a case that has engulfed the city and the Police Department since the afternoon of July 17, 2014, when two officers approached Mr. Garner as he stood unarmed on a sidewalk and accused him of selling untaxed cigarettes.

The death of Mr. Garner, 43, followed by the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo., in August, set off a national debate about policing actions in minority communities and racial discrimination in the criminal justice system.

It's hard to say what an individual life is worth, but I think the settlement is meant to be punitive to the city and a warning to cops who use lethal force...they better use that force in situations that are dangerous to the police officer. Garner was not that dangerous.

If he had been white, he would not have been murdered.

In any event, NYC is getting off cheap because they'll never pay out that amount and the family won't get that amount.

This will encourage more blacks to fight with the police

de Blasio is throwing away taxpayer money. I guarantee if the city had offered the family $200,000, the family would have settled. Eric Garner was a nobody going nowhere and his life was essentially of no value at all.

What are you talking about?? This was not a court verdict that can be appealed. It's an out-of court settlement and the city will pay.

Another case of black privilege from white-hater de blasio. The working white people of NYC will pay this.

He didn't "fight the police". He was standing on the street, having broken up a fight, doing not much of anything when the cops attacked him.

Maybe this will discourage cops from attacking blacks.

Is there no limit to your hatred of white people, you miserable wretch?

The police didn't kill him either. He died in the ambulance of a massive heart attack complicated by obesity and diabetes.

So the family of this worthless human being gets 6 mill after the lawyers take more than half after the cop was proven innocent and this is somehow justice.

Once the cop was deemed innocent the family and their lawyers should be paying New York for the costs.

Where do you get that?

Liar.

FACT is, the cops attacked him for no other reason than him being black and now the city is paying.

Now please quit being the professional victim when all you are is a worthless cockroach who should be stepped on.
