Moving outside the box in another direction, what is wrong seems to be a failure-of-the-jell.

That is to say, the best possible goal is creating a mental life which is the best it can possibly be given the laws of nature which apply to consciousness. The reason it is the best goal there could possibly be is that by definition, there couldn't be anything better than a mental life which is the best it can possibly be.

Such a goal would pull everything in the world together, and it should be an obvious goal. However, that goal isn't jelling.

Instead, people just flail around in a kind of confusion.

This failure-of-the-jell would thus seem to be a key problem of humanity.

The question then is, how could the situation be brought to jell around that best possible goal.
