This doesn't make slavery in the US any less damaging to those enslaved.
Slavery was also damaging to whites who did not own slaves. During the 1850's a healthy young slave could cost about one thousand dollars. To give an idea of what that was worth, when the Civil War began a Union private was paid thirteen dollars a month.

In slave states family farms could not compete with plantations worked by slaves. Virtually every skilled trade and profession paid less in the slave states than in the free states.

The slave trade was the worst mistake whites in the Americas made. Southern whites should have grown their own cotton and tobacco.

The US imported the fewest slaves.

Why did they have so many then? Because ONLY in the US were slaves allowed to have families as where others simply were worked to death.

So because the US treated them better than anywhere else in the world, the US is the only country held responsible for slavery.

Crazy.

why not address slavery that exists today?

Politicians should, but they don't

Why do you think that is?

Why cry about the sins of the past you can do NOTHING about while you ignore the sins of the present you might be able to remedy?

Makes no sense, does it?

Because it's not divisive and a voting machine. Nobody disagrees that human trafficking should be stopped, so therefore, not a politically divisive mechanism to generate votes.

Two words, virtue signaling

Politicians don't really care about people.
