Expelled Oklahoma U fraternity to sue university, possibly President Boren

"...fraternity to sue university..."

Actually not.

Steven Jones is 'exploring' a 'gentleman's agreement,' meaning he knows he has no case.

Otherwise, it comes as no surprise that many on the right seek to defend racism behind the facade of 'free speech,' when in fact the issue has nothing whatsoever to do with 'free speech.'
It was a song and should be protected like a rap song is protected on that campus.
The university has no control over what rap artists sing about

They do have control over racist songs sung by members of that university

The funny thing is, you think you are some legal savant when you are just a hypersensitive control freak and a ******

Never said I was a legal savant. But the University President probably has dozens of lawyers on his side ready to argue the shit out of his position, and the SAE racists have the guy who got Timmy McVeigh a Hot Shot.

If there exists such a "code of conduct" that allows the state to levy punishment upon individuals for speech, it is immoral and thoroughly illegal. Thus it is illegitimate and totally null, it has no standing.

You have no standing morally, and as the above case law shows, legally, for your repressive speech codes.

The university isn't "the State". It's a separate entity from the state.

They have the right to scream the N-word at the top of their lungs. But they shouldn't still expect to be getting an education after violating the campus' code of conduct.

Is there a list of what songs students are allowed to sing so that they can avoid being expelled? Perhaps there is a list of songs they are not allowed to sing. If the president can have students expelled for this, exactly where is the line drawn concerning what students can say or sing?

I would guess the threshold is quite a bit below

Never be a n*gger in SAE
And
You can hang him from a tree but hell never sign with me

Does that help?

And if the rap artist is a student at the university?

Oh wow, he has lawyers willing to take up his case, it must be moral and legal because of this

The Oklahoma University is absolutely the state, it is a public university, and thus is a government institution. Now you are just sounding like an idiot on top of being a shrill ****** and a control freak. Not only is the State enacting speech codes, especially for words in private among voluntarily associating adults, entirely tyrannical and therefore immoral, it is illegal under the First Amendment, as the case law I cited shows.

The very definition of free speech is to be immune from state sanction, to be free of the consequences of State action against you.

Speech control is thought control.

Will college kids get expelled now for telling racist jokes "in private"?

Doesn't seem so

Big difference between that and screaming at the top of your lungs at a fraternity function

No fraternity should tolerate it......SAE encouraged it
There is a big difference in pulling a fraternity's charter and expelling individual students. By the way, did any of the students that were there make an official complaint to the university?
More telling

Did any of them protest that what they were doing was wrong?
If no one complained about a hostel environment, then the case of expelling the students for creating a hostel environment is weak!

Would you approve of Belle Knox being expelled from Duke for making porn?

Seems the entire nation is complaining about a hostile educational environment

Your rights end where my feelings begin.

As I posted earlier on this thread, the University president is probably more concerned about looking weak on racism than he is concerned about the expulsions withstanding a court challenge. If the expulsions are challenged and overturned, he can blame the courts and save face in front of his acedemic peers.

Then expelled all students!

What about "I shot the sheriff, but I didn't shoot the deputy". Would singing about shooting a cop be grounds for expulsion? Is murder any less of a sin than racism?

Should Belle Knox be expelled from Duke for making porn?

Sucks being a racist these days doesn't it?

No brainier for the president

Every Dean in the nation would have done the same

Guess racists don't have 1st ammendment rights. Don't you see the problem here. The first ammendment doesn't only protect speech that we like or agree with, it protects speech that we hate or disagree with.

Legal in that he will prevail in court. Moral because some young shithead singing about lynching black people pretty much deserves all the score he can get.

Dude, besides your weird fascination with my sex life, the fact is the University has a code of conduct covering EXACTLY these kind of issues that these two punks signed when they enrolled.

They don't have a leg to stand on.

The very definition of free speech is to be immune from state sanction, to be free of the consequences of State action against you.

Speech control is thought control.

And if the state were throwing them in jail, you might have a point. But in this case, a university is revoking their contract for their violation of terms of that contract.

HOSTILE environment!

Hostel is a series of bad horror films.

Yes, I'm completely okay with Belle Knox being expelled for making porn.
