English IS the official language of the United States

.

As I have often been reminded by many of my British friends, I do not speak English, I speak American.

The last thing we want in America is an official language.

Then, before you know it, people would be expected to communicate in English, they would be able to get better jobs and careers, and they'd be able to improve their own lives. We'd be able to raise cultural standards of communication. Barriers between people would be brought down, and holy shit, maybe Identity Politics would no longer be effective political leverage.

Some might even change their minds and suddenly feel like America is a good country that doesn't need to be "changed" or "re-made" or "fundamentally transformed", and that we're all on the same team.

No, we can't have that.

Wow, a panacea! In reality, it would do none of that and would likely be unenforceable in any practical manner.

Well, at least we agree it will never happen.

Let the division continue.

Relax. We've always been divisive. It's a source of our energy.

Has anybody ever noticed that English is owing to the assimilation of words from many other languages throughout history?

You speak English.

How would you know? We have never spoken. Maybe I only type English.

.

Nope, you speak it as well.

In common discourse, I use a number of French terms that the English would not be caught dead using. With some Italian and Spanish invectives along the way.

A huge number of words in modern English are of French origin.

I enjoyed learning Latin during legal education and reading Nostradamus, also had to learn French. After 30 years of not using the languages I learned to include Spanish, I lost the knowledge I once had..
You have to wonder why so many immigrants absolutely refuse to learn any English and even get mad if someone suggests they should. Americans often learn more Spanish for a 1 week vacation in Cancun then immigrants living here for 20 years have bothered to learn.

More languages our citizens have some familiarity with the better off they'll be. Especially in business applications.

Insofar as official language goes though, English is it. Passing a superfluous law stating that though is redundant. Would argue though since most all traffic signs are in English, making DMV tests in English-only is just good sense. Wanna speak your native language everywhere else fine, but making sure you can read traffic signs is in everyone's best interest at the very least. Wanna make US citizenship tests avail in other languages I have no problem there. Just like to be think you know what "STOP" means. :)

Not really. I know Spanish and it hasn't benefitted me at all in my job.

I think coming here as an immigrant should more than just big easy money and government handouts. The immigrant
