One of the areas where U.S. foreign and domestic policies intersect most tangibly, as we saw over the past four years during Donald Trump’s administration, is on immigration and refugees. President Joe Biden campaigned on a promise to launch a sharply different strategy to deal with migrants and refugees, especially at the border with Mexico, but now his plans are facing new headwinds.

In a legislative election last weekend in El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele’s party, New Ideas, along with his ally the Grand Alliance for National Unity, won a landslide victory. Early results suggest that Bukele’s bloc will enjoy a parliamentary supermajority, controlling at least two-thirds of the chamber’s seats, enough to enact legislation and install just about any loyalist he chooses in positions of power.

The outcome is problematic for Biden because Bukele has already shown troubling signs of disdain for democratic norms—and strengthening democracy and the rule of law is one of the key elements of Biden’s ambitious plan to reduce immigration from Central America by addressing its root causes.

This would almost be funny if it wasn't so sad. The repetition of phrases such as "democracy and rule of law" implying that Bukele doesn't like those things and then trying to paint him as Trump. This is arrogance.

If the US doesnt approve then every voter in El Salvador can go and fuck themselves. That has been standard US policy for decades.

The guy has been President for two years - since June of 2019. A corrupt right wing authoritarian shouldn'e be a problem for Biden. Americans much perfer a right wing government in CA than a left leaning - aka "communist" government.

Huh?

Where did you get the idea that Sleepy Joe wants to REDUCE immigration from El Salvador and other central American republics?

Mr. Biden wants to increase the number of dreamers coming up in caravans so that he can offer them refugee status and other benefits on their Road to Citizenship and part of the Biden Base.

The article is condescending. The US has always been arrogant towards Latin America. Always. There is a level of hostility right under the surface.

He doesn't. It's about lowering wages.

Latin America is run by putzes and atavistic vermin, and its people obviously wouldn't have it any other way.

That's not what is posted on the website. The US government is working to reinstate the anti-gang measures to reduce gang violence in El Salvador, as well as climate change drought, to keep Salvadorians at home.

You'd be a whole lot smarter to stop citing right wing talking points, since everything that Biden is doing is the exact opposite of what you're being told.

Apparently you missed the entire campaign about how Biden wanted to open the borders up, tear down the wall, and even go directly to Shithole nations to get people to sign up for the Illegal Lottery.
