Over the decades, easily hundreds of my students have gone on the join the military or local police forces after graduation. Seems pretty patriotic to me.

One of the things about having strongly-held beliefs is that your perspective is fucked up. This is one of the greatest benefits of instant replay in sports television. How many times have you seen a play, been sure that your guy was safe/out, then realized that the umpire was right all along?

The vast majority of literate students coming out of HS are liberals at that point in their development. In fact, I'm suspicious of young people who are Conservative for other than religious reasons. But is that because their teachers have indoctrinated them, or because liberalism is attractive to those with no life experience? How is it fair that some people have mountains of money and resources while others go wanting? Then when you get that first paycheck as a full-time adult worker, you see where all those "social safety net" programs are coming from: YOU ARE PAYING FOR THEM!

It is a life-changing moment for a lot of people. But some never see that light.

Another interesting fact about this school was that it was surrounded by huge cornfields on 3 sides with the vocational school and middle school, and football field on the remaining side. Guess what was next to the football field? You would be right if you said a cornfield.

Most public school teachers do not live where their own kids attend school anyway. After I moved to KY, my daughter attended schools in the county where I worked for only one year. Mainly because I was let go due to budget cuts. Almost every teacher's kid attended their own schools in Florida. I taught many of my coworkers' kids, just like they did mine.

We had many former private school teachers who finally worked their way up until they could get their qualifications in order to teach in a public school.

That statement is patently false. Our best students score the same as the best students in other countries. It is the AVERAGE test score that is lower.
