Lynyrd Skynyrd Guitarist Ed King Dead at 68 – Rolling Stone

Ed King, the Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist who joined the band in 1972 to give the Southern rock group its iconic three-guitar sound, died Wednesday in Nashville. He was 68. A cause of death was not specified, though King had been battling lung cancer and had recently been hospitalized for the disease.

I met Ed a couple of times in Dallas, once at the GSWGS & once at the Hard Rock. He seemed like a pretty nice, laid back guy. RIP Ed.

Was he a survivor of the plane crash?

Ed was not on the plane, nor in the band at the time of the plane crash

Ed was a member before & after the plane crash; twice & also, not an original member

Ed joined in 1972, three years after the band formed

yea when they were just some local band trying to make it....but he played on their first three LP's,and that is all that matters to most to consider him one of the guys when they hit it big.....His guitar playing and songwriting skills were an essential element on the band's first three albums....

From what I can glean on the internet about 12 members of the original group are dead. What's so special about King?

I believe Gary Rossington (guitar) is the only original surviving member

I didn't know there was anything special about Ed; he seems like just a regular Joe

I guess that may be a bit special, now days
