They were successful copy cats.
They were the first boy band produced and heavily promoted by the record/radio conglomerates. Fanboys love to claim they created this sound, not even close. Numerous bands sounded just like them - BEFORE - they even started playing together.
A band like the Hollies. More talented, better singing and wrote several major hits.
But The Beatles "got the nod" from the labels - so they were catapulted ahead.

No. They are, by far, the most overrated band in world history.
80% of their songs range from just plain bad to complete garbage.
20% is genius, outstanding.
McCartney was willing to record anything, literally pooping out songs by the hour. And most were god-awful.
The problem with this era is that bands were heavily-heavily pushed to make songs as fast as possible. And Paul McCartney was more than willing to do that, he could care less about quality - he was a quantity guy just like the labels wanted. This attitude is what ended the Beatles, Lennon and especially Harrison wanted the "preteen bubble gum pop" to stop and do something better.
