Dr Zhivago (1965)

Not at all. The revolt was a key element in the film. I am just providing some context.
Not really. You're trying to focus on one thing to distract from the methods that communists use to take power.
I'm sure what escapes you is that there is a world-wide socialist movement that is trying to recreate the communist revolution in several countries as we speak and you can't figure it out.

It was a great movie, though much too depressing for me to consider it the best ever. However I could look at Julie Christie all day.

Yes it was depressing but for a reason.

Yuri Zhivago was apolitical. He didn't give a shit about either the imperial leadership or the Communist revolution. He was caught up in the times and there was nothing he could do about it. He just wanted to live, be happy and be left alone but the times he was living in didn't allow that to happen.

It was a romance story and could have been told in many other time periods.

Why would you bother with politics when you could be shagging Julie Christie ?

You dont get to set the agenda on a film discussion. Get over your commiephobia and discuss the film.

One of my favorite moving movies of all time, although I was too young (around 10) to watch it the first time around. At 10, watching the implied rape scene was a little too impactful. The scene of the “horrible witch” (along with a male character) forcing Yuri and Sasha out of their home and stealing their belongings was also carved in my young memory. Even in today’s world, with kids knowing more now at 10 compared to the ‘90’s, I would still recommend 12-13.

The music alone is moving, and most of the the frozen snow scenes look like portraits. Incredible acting and many memorable lines.

I felt sympathy for the wife who is truly in love with Yuri, although he always felt she was more like a close friend as they had grown-up as such. I had wished the author would have written a different storyline for Sasha’s life, child, and her father to have found safety. Alas, reality was depicted over a dreamlike ending. I never resented Laura in any way though, likely due to the inner beauty of her own nature and Yuri’s strong love for her.

I watched it about a week ago. Ive seen it a few times and I do believe that it is probably the greatest film ever made. just about everything is perfect and the themes it covers have kept me awake for a few nights since.
The revolution is covered and we see that the new boss is same as the old boss. Its a bit depressing.

The hero is a poet/doctor who basically marries the wrong woman during the Bolshevik revolution.. Sounds a bit seedy but there are no good and bad guys here. the film treats them all as just ordinary folk while we see how decisions made can affect your whole life.

Omar Sharif is surely a wasted talent and Julie Christie plays the most beautiful girl in the world with some ease.
The Kinks immortalised her as the Julie in terry and Julie who "met at the station every friday night. At one point she lived down the road from us in Mid Wales which is a very quiet place.

Its a great story and can be enjoyed on that level but the true power is how it makes you reflect on your own life. Its just an amazing film. David Lean could teach modern film makers how to let viewers see and hear the action. An artthat has been lost these days.
It's a good movie as is Lean's Lawrence of Arabia.....Passage to India, on the other hand, was torture to watch.

Interesting... are you talking about the Lawrence of Arabia with Peter O'Toole... I had that on my "to watch" list

I don’t doubt the movie depicted the time accurately. I just prefer uplifting or humorous movies over depressing ones. There are way too many depressing movies.

I don't like depressing movies probably any more than you do.

However, this movie has a fantastic epic story line, tremendous scenes, great acting and what many consider the best movie music score of all times.

It is a classic. We all fell in love with Laura and grieved over how Yuri's life was wasted through no fault of his own.

We Americans living nowadays are mostly spoiled because we have lived in great times. Yuri Zhivago was born at the wrong time. His life started off great but the Winds of History screwed him up big time.

I bet you loved the part when the Communists moved the shitheads into the house own by the wealthy family. You know, equality and everything. Why should they live in a big house when all those poor people lived in shacks? Communism at its best.
I bet you're a load of laughs at family get togethers.

Used to be one of my favorites. But I havent seen it in a while so it's fallen down the list. Probably need to see it again, especially since it is winter time. Not sure about it being the greatest film of all time but it is in the top 100.

David Lean films are about as good as they get. His masterpieces are Great Expectation, Oliver Twist, Hobson's Choice, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago,Ryan's Daughter, and A Passage to India.

His later films, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter, and A Passage to India were not just stories well acted but beautiful to watch and listen to. The music in Zhivago and Ryan's daughter were done by Maurice Jarre. The music and cinematography in both movies were fantastic and both got academy awards for best cinematography and music.

If you are a movie fan and have not seen these two films do so. I warn you they are long movies. Zhivago is an action adventure story but mostly a love story. Ryan daughter is a love story but the music and cinematograph transcends the story. If you download them get the high def versions. Both movies are available in HD on Prime but they cost $3 or $4 dollars. Zhivago is also available on HBO Max

Based on a review from ‘taint, I’ll not bother to see it. His recommendations suck ass like he does.

David Lean movies can be uplifting but they rarely end happily which we saw in Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter, Laurence of Arabia, and Bridge on the River Kwai
