Donald Trump says ‘economic force’ could be used to eliminate ‘artificially drawn’ border between Canada and U.S.

Umm, I don't think he's joking, at least not about the tariffs.

The whole "51st state" lobby is his test balloon. Trump loves big deals and action. He thinks outside the box and has creative vision with this.

In the short term I can't see it happening, but in the long term it just may occur out of necessity. I think Trump could negotiate a E.U type situation with some success. I'd LOVE to be able to compete directly with highly educated American workers for jobs there, you have plenty. You could do the same here for those looking to live in the cold.
If china uses canada to get around US tariffs against it thats a different story

But otherwise we will not and should not impose tariffs on canada

Like last time Trump was President, he imposed tariffs on the import of Canadian aluminum and steel, but that was only in response to Trudeau's tariffs of of 270% on US dairy products. Trump lifted the steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico a year later. Lifting the tariffs were seen as helping pave the way for further ratification of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement. In a joint statement, the Canadian and the U.S. governments said the U.S. will scrap the metals duties within two days of the deal. Trudeau also removed the tariffs levied on American goods.

You are quoting Trump from the article. I asume that what Trump he is referring to,.if he isn't trolling or using this all as a negotiation tactic; is thst if there is a trade agreement between Canada and the U.S and regular tariffs don't apply so the border is but a formality at thisnpoint.
You're right. He's "trolling." More than trolling, actually. Bargaining from a position of strength. Leftists and conspiracy kooks don't understand him.

Watch the end result, not the bluster

Canadians can't take a joke. Just watch: Next Trump will be trolling Putin by saying we should make Ukraine our next state.

:laughing0301:
If you're writing off Trump's nonsense as "he's just trolling", then what's the point? What value does it serve diplomatically?

If you don't know the tricks and tactics Donald Trump uses to get what MAGA wants, I'm sure as hell not going to explain them to you. We wouldn't want you figuring it out by the next election, it's better for the country that you folks lose again in 2028.

Why not? What's he getting that "MAGA wants"?

You folks? Oh, you're dong that brain-dead partisan drone thing again. Lovely.

I suspect that most of his supporters don't get what he's doing either. That's why you can't explain it.

Oh, you don't like the fact that I'm partisan, I have leaders I believe in, and am willing to support them?

Sucks to be you, doesn't it? YOu have nobody to believe in and nobody the look up to. All you got was a party that stuffed an aging, senile, failing President in the closet, yanked the rug out from underneath 14 million primary election voters, and shoved some cackling harpy in your faces, hoping you'd elect her on the basis that she's "female" and supposedly "black."

Of course I'm "partisan." My party would never throw my primary election vote in the trash and Jim Crow my ass.

Though my expectations are very low regarding depth of dialogue around here these days, I was genuinely curious if anyone was gonna bring that up.

Same, exactly. But it's truly amazing to me that no one here (as far as I've seen) has brought this up. I mean... I clearly remember back in the day, true conservatives were talking about the NAU and warning against this sort of thing. Now folks are practically cheering it on. Things are getting more and more surreal, by the day. If this continues, I can see where it's heading.

No, that's not it at all. It's your braindead insistence that anyone who disagrees with you is a leftist or a Democrat. You literally can't imagine anything else.

I know this is inconvenient for you, but the lines have been drawn and there are only two sides to choose from.

You're either on one side or the other. If you're not, you're just in the way and are gonna be ran the **** over.

And you really believe that. That's what I'm talking about. It's bonkers, but it's where you're at.

At least you know where I stand. You on the other hand, don't seem to stand for anything.

You're one of those shape-shifting fools who are afraid to take a stand and accept any responsibility.

At least you know where I stand.
Actually, I don't. That's the problem. Trumpsters have no consistent ideology. They flip and flop with the breeze, or more accurately, with the whim of the Donald.

I do know that you've abandoned core conservative values like limited government and free markets.

I can tell you who is sweating the most in Canada, Doug Ford the Premier as it appears Trump is serious about the tariffs. I cannot imagine he would repeat this position unless Trump meant it.

Nobody on earth can say I didn't warn our leaders as far back as Harper if we didn't find common ground and shared Values. Harpers first term was solid, his second term was a waste. He had an opportunity to expand civil liberties in Canada and embrace a more "Republic" approach to citizens rights, but he failed.

Now Ford loudly declared that he would stop sending energy to states like Michigan if Trump applied tariffs. Even the Premier of Alberta warned against such an unrepentant approach. What a poor decision to make under duress.

This is how you know some people are surrounded by cops in the most bullying province (along with Quebec) in the country. Covert cops destroying lives, careers, our reputation and economy and this guy walks around as if in uniform himself whacking his night stick against the most vulnerable homeless people in Ontario but lashing out in anger when a bigger dog bites back.

Ford ran some label company if my memory serves correct and he considers himself an equal when dealing with Trump. Meanwhile Trump has had 1000s of LLCs, built a global empire, his own social media and now president...twice. The response from a Premier in a province fully beholden to the U.S is to say "how dare you tariff us, we will just raise the ante significantly and not send you energy!" That's now how you treat a nation that has treated Ontario VERY well. You find a tariff of your own or try and negotiate, you don't deny reality of the imbalance and threaten to cause great harm to U.S citizens.

Trump doesn't seem like the type who wouldn't be informed of this threat and who wouldn't respond to such a threat by applying the very tariff our Premier pretended he could prevent with such an increase in response. These are the greatest minds we can offer folks. You would think this country could raise the prospects of those who understand Americans through multiple conversations over decades, instead they lift up the captains of the police who prevent the nation from succeeding.

Many Canadian authorities from the RCMP on down to the OPP and TPS only seem to do well when they have other creepy Canadians (and American police who are anti-liberty) helping them...

This nation should consider hiring those who understand America better than they do.

Earlier in the day, the incoming president was asked whether he would consider using “military force” to annex Canada, given Trump’s refusal to rule out resorting to such measures to secure control of Greenland and the Panama Canal.

“No. Economic force, because Canada and the United States, that would really be something,” Trump said at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla.

“You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like … it would also be much better for national security.”
Trump went on to state that the U.S. spends “hundreds of billions” of dollars to “protect” and “take care of Canada,” clarifying that while the U.S. has “no right” to claim a sovereign nation, Canada should simply become an American state if it is receiving so much support from its southern neighbour.

Trump said he asked Trudeau, during the prime minister’s trip to Florida in late November, what would happen if the U.S. were to no longer “subsidize” Canada. Last year, according to American data, the U.S. trade deficit in goods with Canada as of November was around $55 billion USD.

“I said, ‘What would happen if we didn’t do it?’ He said, ‘Canada would dissolve,’” said Trump, who also told reporters he still believes hockey legend Wayne Gretzky should be prime minister.
It's not taking canada by force that bothers me - though we've failed twice already - but what the hell would we do with you canadians?

Trump says a lot of shit you just have to ignore. He's always speaking off the top of his head rather than thinking things through (at the time he speaks). The other side doesn't put themselves out there like Trump does, avoids reporters, doubletalks, changes the subject or doesn't answer the question, and has to answer in a politically correct fashion or just plain lies. And, of course, the dem's media jumps right on everything Trump says and overemphasizes every detail to make Trump look bad. You have to just ignore the fluff and judge Trump by what he actually does instead of the shit coming out of his mouth.
