The first part of your sentence is correct. We are followers of Christ. We are not following President Trump, we are anointing him to serve this country. Are you aware that everything you have accused President Trump of doing (whether he did them or not) is also in the story of the life of King David? In those days, David was a king and the people were still quite capable--and able--to follow God. In the same way Donald Trump can direct the country in political matters without interfering the all that the faithful are offering/giving to God what is God's. The President and God are not in competition with each other for the people's attention in what the other is doing.

Trump is not going to bring God back to this nation. God was never a part of this nation, and Trump has not bought God to himself.

In your life, that most turn to God out of despair, is truly sad. My life has always been different. People find joy in God in all aspects of life.
Worship of something--putting one thing above all else--is innate to all human beings. Following the ways/commands of God is what has brought joy into my life. Joy, unlike happiness, can survive in the most sorrowful, most traumatic events in one's life.
