Doge reduced warning and response time for the Texas flood.

Be honest….

Do you think slashing personnel and budgets of NWS and FEMA is a wise idea?

NWS personnel can go work for the airlines ... they need weather forecasts ... why should taxpayers fund that, just charge more for airline tickets ... States can pay for their own disasters ... FEMA can never be as cost effective ...

Private business can perform government services better than government ... Fascism 101 ...

Being as NWS is looking to only rehire 125, I'd be inclined to say yes. FEMA has a long history of failures over many administrations, plus they haven't cut anyone yet. It's being evaluated with a report coming out in 2026. I'd say it needs restructured at the minimum. I like the states ramrodding recovery efforts with monetary assistance from the fed.

Do you genuinely believe "the cuts" were the reason for the tragic loss of life and absent the cuts the record high flood waters would have abated or not been an issue?

When we talk of sleeping at night - does the ferocity and rapidity of the flood enter your circadian observations ?
I think there is a real likelihood the cuts compromised the forecasts and timing of warnings. I know that my children's lives are worth having a staffed organization working effectively. How do you read this and not have doubts?:

This hiring initiative aims to "stabilize" operations and ensure adequate staffing during hurricane season and other periods of severe weather. They are not in place yet. To stabilize something it needs to be destabilized.

  • “. . . operational unit managers and staff experienced stress, fatigue, and reduced morale resulting from their efforts to cover for vacancies.”
  • “. . . but the long-term result has been that employees are fatigued and morale is low.”
  • “. . . staff are getting worn down covering extra forecasting shifts.”
  • “One operational unit manager we interviewed said staff in his unit were demoralized because they had continued to cover the workload for multiple vacancies.”
  • “. . . staff are concerned that the agency may be intentionally leaving vacant positions open to downsize.”
  • “NWS headquarters officials acknowledged that vacancies had created challenges and stress …”

Fires can be prevented and fought. Floods can't.
That maybe the dumbest take of all time. But try this equally dumb response: Floods can be forecasted... Fires cannot.

AI Overview

Yes, there was a Warning Coordination Meteorologist on duty at the National Weather Service office in Austin/San Antonio the night of the Texas flood. While the office was fully staffed with five employees that night, a permanent Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) was not present. The position was vacant due to an early retirement offer accepted by Paul Yura, who had previously held the role. The WCM acts as a crucial link between forecasters and emergency managers.

Awful quiet all of the sudden.
Delldud just confirmed that Trump killed those girls.

Trump has always shown little tolerance for disaster recovery going back to his first term.
He became annoyed that Puerto Rico was costing so much after two consecutive Cat 5 hurricanes.
He is irate that California has fires and threatens to stop paying.

Because I factor in the severity and instantaneous onset of the historically high flood waters in an area which is the epicenter of flash floods and I don't see where more employees was the driving issue - anymore than I blame the NWS for ill predicting the impact of Katrina. I do also note warnings were issued in advance.

But as I political observer I do see the opportunity for you to try to gain political upside and punch below the belt.

Even though its been totally debunked.

Did NWS staff shortages contribute to deadly Texas floods? John Morales answers

Hurricane specialist John Morales and the National Weather Service answer whether staffing cuts hampered communication about the oncoming deadly flooding.

Was the forecast correct? Yes.

"It was a good forecast," he said. "I’m on record as stating that I don't think any of the cuts going on with NOAA and the National Weather Service had anything to do with the quality of the forecast [or] the advanced warning of the potential for flooding and damaging rains."

Did cuts to NWS delay essential communication?

As for whether critical, potentially life-saving information got to local emergency managers in charge of evacuations and public alerts, Morales said the NWS has a long history of collaborating closely with media and emergency managers.

"It’s a three-legged stool, where if one of the legs is broken then the stool falls over," Morales said.

When asked if cuts hampered communication about the oncoming deadly flooding, Morales said he doesn't think so.

"Did it play a role here? I kind of doubt it," he said. "I’m on the record as stating that I think this degradation in particular in regard to the coordination is going to be a slow degradation."
______________

"We had adequate amount of staff to get out the alerts and warnings to the public," Fahy said. "The flood warning was issued 12 hours in advance of the event... They recognized that there was so much water vapor in the atmosphere, that there was potential for a high impact weather event."

Wasn't the theft of money and goods that had anything to do with it was it?

He is irate that California has fires and threatens to stop paying.
Wouldn't have anything to do with them having absolutely no fire control programs in cities and forests?

Rewarding stupidity with tax payer cash isn't.

The Republican President?
The Republican Governor?
The Republican County Officials?
The Republican Town leadership?
DEI?

There is no one to blame. It was a historic level flood. Texas Hill country floods. Its floods are of legend, song and literature.
