A lot of has to do with the power of suggestion..Say a child is being carried by a Mother that desires a female child and speaks with aspirations while carrying that it is such, only to be disappointed when at birth the child is a male. The child is then rejected for it's gender and the Mother proceeds to treat the child as a female child...Later in life the child wants to change gender, no surprise...
