I think it's a great idea that never should have been abolished. Parents will get their first OBJECTIVE scorecard on the fitness of their kids. Some will squeal "fat shaming" or "bullying" but so what? This gets right to the core issue of expecting more of yourself and more of your parenting. What say you?

I excelled when I took the test.

Anyone who thinks there's anything wrong with the test must be a lazy parent who thinks quality child care for their kids is a video game and a box of Little Debbies

My younger brother's overweight son would come home from school and demand a snack, and when I said no, he pitched a fit the likes of he could die of starvation between lunch and dinner! Disgusting.

Kids need to be active and parents need to be better educated on diet.

I see too many videos of angry Americans to be honest and alot of this has to be with being out of shape and having high blood pressure even when they are young. What is it that some are eating to be so angry all the time?

I sense high blood pressure and people who have issues with their temper and I wouldn't be surprised hidden things in food is impacting this.

Americans consume way too much sugar, among almost everything else. Drinks like Red Bull are terrible, twice the sugar and caffeine of soda which is already bad.

My wife and I do the old fart mall walk a couple times a week. We walk through the food court and oh my, It's not pretty.

That would make sense. Exericize for kids is critical to overcome this sugar. Think of a 1 year old puppy and how much energy they have. That's what kids need, no question in my opinion.

In grade school, we used to have a 2 kilometre run that involves the side streets, probably something they wouldn't allow today due to risks and insurance. However, we would sometimes have competitions where we would collect stickers for school gear, which was pretty nice and I could use a new shirt, shorts and cap being poor.

I would wake up at 6 am, might have breakfast, sometimes wouldn't. I would sometimes run the 2k three long laps of the route BEFORE school even began.

I left the school with the second best 2km time in its history. We would also play sports after school and on weekends. Summer was insane. Baseball and hockey were the main sports. Sometimes literally 10 hours a day. I played so much that when one group of kids left, I'd play with the next group.

This is what kids need. Even if they have a subpar diet, they can overcome it with activity.

Yep, we would often have 3 sport days playing baseball, football and basketball games. Five of us who were the best basketball players in the neighborhood would play at the local park all afternoon. We would rarely lose the court even to teams with grown men.

The cool thing about your story is how the school competition motivated you to get better. That is almost completely lost on kids today unless they are older and trying to make the JV or Varsity team.

I'm sorry, but I missed the part where the parents don't already know the general fitness of their kid from their own pediatrician?

Kids should have a shutoff timer on their cellphones and computers.

OMG! The doctor who I saw in Washington and his wife do not allow their children to have electronic devices, period, and they only get to watch approved TV.

Home schooled children and they are brilliant, well adjusted socially, engaging, polite. They socialize with other home schooled kids for things like athletics and such.

Don't mind reinstating the fitness test a long a it isn't run like it was when I was a kid. Our gym coaches were bullies fresh back from Vietnam, and thought they were drill instructors. They decided everybody was going to pass the guidelines by 50% and screamed at the little kid 12 year old boys as they did their pushups and pullups. If you weren't able to meet their standard, you had to start again after 5 minute. That rope scared me to death. All the way to the top of the gym, with no pad if you fell. Just hard concrete. That would be stopped today. Not sure why it wasn't topped then.
