Allowing such massive spurts in populations doesn't allow for natural growth and decent planning and wrecks schools in the lower class neighborhoods, generating a vicious cycle of crowding and academic failure. If you sign your name to any official loan document, you are "giving YOUR word" that YOU will pay any debt, no one else. John Smith and Jane Doe living down the street didn't sign that loan document, YOU DID and thus YOU and YOU ALONE owe the money, not them. Pay up and make sure that the degree you are going for, is one that will highly likely manifest itself towards an occupation, unlike degrees in Gender Studies and Happiness (the latest stupidity).

The government needs to honor it's contracts with the public.

Many student loans were taken out by teachers and nurses and other careers that don't pay well but require a high level of education needed. These loans were to be forgiven once their term of service had ended in roughly 10-15 years.

But due to malfeasance and screw ups...they weren't.

On top of this they widened who could get a student loan and for what sort of education so much that you could get a loan to study circus performing...and be in debt $100,000....just to be a clown.

So....
They need to limit what sort of higher education the government is willing to loan money for before they forgive any debt and keep unscrupulous from doing a con job with college kids.

Exactly....I know a young man conned into acting classes and $75,000 later he is a slow electrician. He does OK but is kinda slow at his trade...but he doesn't use his degree either.

We have NCLB programs at public school but zero standards for post secondary education.

I don’t believe the scam that higher education has become is solely the fault of politicians. The leading administrators of academia hold greater responsibility. Easy government student loan programs hold responsibility too. State politicians have some authority over their state universities, so they hold responsibility
