Monica Seles was a fantastic player. She had power, quickness, and tenacity. She had overtaken Steffi Graf as #1, which is why she was targeted. She came back a couple years later, but never reached the same level. The physical injury inflicted by the stab wound was nothing, but she was psychologically devastated.

Very sad.

More interesting, perhaps, than Becker, is Rod Laver.

In a twisted, perverse way, Laver is sort of the Wilt Chamberlain of tennis. In his day, he was The Man, taking on all comers on every surface. Watching videos of Laver today, it looks like he is not that impressive, but it was a different era.

Parenthetically, he was a relatively small athlete...less than 6'.

Do you remember Monica Seles?

She was the player who was stabbed during a match by some crazed fan, You never hear about her anymore, but she was rising thru the ranks to the very top, and believe that's where she was when it happened. She disappeared after that incident.
1993 in Hamburg, Germany.

Monica Seles returned to the tour two years later, now playing as an American, and won the Canadian Open in her comeback tournament. She reached the final of the US Open but lost to Steffi Graf. Seles would win the 1996 Aussie Open, which turned out to be her final Grand Slam tournament title.

I was fortunate to be able to see Monica Seles at Wimbledon in 1999 on the old Court No. 2 in her first round match (see picture below). She had a great ovation when she arrived. Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam she didn't capture.

Seles had a protected ranking of #1, tied w/ Graf in her 2 1/2 yr. absence from the tour after the stabbing! OTTH, it took prodding by Martina Navratilova to get her back in time to play the USO in '95! As w/ Caitlin Clark, the women showed their nastier side by resenting the fact the WTA kept Seles at the top of the rankings! Monica proved the b!tches hadn't overtaken her after all that time off the tour making the final of the '95 US Open, then continued into the following season by winning "down under" at the '96 Aussie Open! Along came Martina Hingis & the Williams sisters & it was was all over for them! Hingis was literally a little girl playing chessboard tennis vs the Amazons of the tour! She was very impressive taking 3 Majors the following season in '97, just missing a Calendar Year GS by dropping the French Open final to Iva Majoli! I'm a tennis historian going back to the 70's! 😕

i have made a thread for her

I remember the great Bjorn Borg, who retired at 26! He was crushing the tour and then he walked away in his prime, and never returned. He won multiple majors before he quit tennis.

Yes, I do remember Becker too.
yes, Björn Borg is also famous, or was once.
