When Jesus spoke to his Apostles, was he talking about his faith, his ministry and teachings? If so, why would anyone point to one line "as a be all, end all" - ignoring thousands of other words, teachings in both the New and Old Testaments?
In that particular paragraph of John, Jesus was comforting his Apostles because they knew he was going to leave them.
John 14:
Jesus, the Way, Leads to the Father
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You place your trust in God.[
c]
Trust also in me.
2 In my Father’s house
there are many dwelling places.
If there were not,
would I have told you
that I am going to prepare a place for you?
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again
and will take you to myself,
so that where I am,
you may also be.
4 You know the way
to the place I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
Jesus, the Truth, Reveals the Father
6 Jesus replied,
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father
except through me.
7 If you know me,
then you will know my Father also.
From now on you do know him.
You have seen him.”
Jesus was replying to Thomas when Thomas asked, "We don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?" "If you know me, then you will also know my Father" (Faith that his way, his truth is in accordance with God's ways).
What did Jesus emphasize throughout his ministry and through his works? "To Love your neighbor as yourself" "To love one another" "Mercy, forgiveness, not to judge one another" He was friends with tax collectors, outcasts, women of the night, drunkards, and so forth. He defended the persecuted, helped the sick, helped the blind see and instructed a path of "righteousness of thought" that is manifested through works.
That's the way I understand his truth and life.
