I've seen this elsewhere.
For example, Reuters had an article about a white guy shooting up an Asian massage parlor, and the article focused on the fact he was white and the women were Asian, commenting on probably racism despite the shooter never suggesting it was.
Then, during that same time, you had a man from the middle east shoot up a crowd of white folk, yet the article failed to identify the race of the shooter as being from the middle east and the fact his victims were all white. The article, instead, focused on the need for gun control. Keep in mind he was from Syria, and at that time, the US had just bombed Syria. There was not even a mention of a suspected link in terms of being retaliatory, but they felt OK speculation about white racism.
