Free speech is the cornerstone of all democracies. Words like misinformation and disinformation do not come from democracies, they come from totalitarian administrations in closed societies. When citizens begin to recognize that media in their free societies crosses a line from watching government to watching the people, a populist like Donald Trump may come along and brand that media as fake news. When that happens, a spotlight shines in the shadowland of a democracy transitioning to authoritarianism with media as an ally.

We all watched as newspapers across the country published editorials attacking Trump as an enemy of free speech. What Trump was threatening was groupthink media and this triggered the broadsheet mobs to hit the streets. This happened right before the eyes of the people as they saw print media that knew they were dying on the vine try to save themselves by becoming public relations for Washington.

We see today as that same media covers for a dangerous, demented, loose cannon in the White House. Our electoral process is in tatters and may never be trusted again thanks to a domestic print media that sees real free speech as the problem. Much like the history of all controlled societies authentic free speech is branded as conspiracy theory. The lens in this kind of media is never turned on the government it is always on the people. Whitey Bulger was free for sixteen years while the My Pillow Guy was tracked and arrested by the FBI for supporting Donald Trump who exposed a corroded and corrupted print media.

How can a newspaper or any other media outlet take part in a free speech lynching?
Are you suggesting that the media doesn't have the right to say what they want?

From a Canadian's POV, there are very few legitimate reasons to curtail free speech. One that I can think of is the censoring of hate speech that encourages violence.

That doesn't seem to fit your complaint.

Yes, and your Orange God was spreading disinformation because he's an authoritarian who tried to overturn a free and fair election.

And you're whoring for him, snowflake.

Yet all throughout 2015 and 2016 leading up to the election, it was Trump getting free press coverage 24x7. Facebook, Twitter, other social media platforms swooning over him, giving him a platform reach no other political candidate had the advantage of.

This whine....doesn't play. The bottom line is Trump did everything to himself. And then tried to deflect blame for it to a media that just reporting on what he did and said.
Donald Trump is NONE of these things you have ascribed to him. He is simply a con artist and an opportunist who saw an opening and took advantage of lemmings like you to gain power.

This single sentence is the perfect indication of your break with reality, made even more egregious by your allegations that the actual dangerous, demented, loose cannon is this President, and not the former President, the one who instigated a violent insurrection attempt against a free and fair election.

One that your fevered, conspiratorial mind thinks was stolen. You're too far down the rabbit hole at this stage in your life to ever think rationally, sadly.
