Congress clears omnibus spending bill averting shutdown - CNNPolitics.com
In a surprise, the House overwhelmingly approved the measure in a 316-113 vote. (Actually, only 150 Republicans voted yea. The majority that passed it were Democrats.)
Obama called Ryan after the vote to thank him "for helping government work," the speaker said. The president also invited Ryan to join him for a meal at the White House in the new year. (See? Obama invited him to lunch. Obama tries to work with Republicans but the white ones hate him to much.)
there are still things in it worth supporting, such as a health program for 9/11 first responders (ooh, that had to hurt the 'let him die' Republicans.)
But the speaker argued that in divided government, there was a limit to what Democrats could accept and said it contained "some big wins for the country, whether it's lifting the oil export ban, increasing military spending or renewing health care for the 9/11 first responders." (Republicans love two of those three. Lifting the export ban they hope will raise the cost of gas and all the fracking will devastate the country. Military spending? Oh yea, it's going to take a huge navy and lots of giant planes to hunt down 30,000 guerrilla fighters hiding behind rocks in their own country. But they are bummed about health care for first responders. Funny how they want those people to rely on a health care program Republicans want to end.)

So is there a conspiracy here? Why would Republicans want to pass a spending bill that will take us into next September? They just don't let an opportunity like this go. There has to be a reason. Anyone?
