She was informed by the Justice Department to do it, so it doesn't appear to be a secret. More than likely it's a new requirement because of the sanctions done to Georgia over the whole Ukraine thing. According to the article, she wasn't even fined, just told to sign up for the register.

Christina Pushaw submitted her registration to the U.S. Department of Justice under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. She reported receiving $25,000 in compensation from Mikheil Saakashvili, who was president of Georgia between 2004 and 2013.

Pushaw wrote that her work for Saakashvili ended in December 2020. DeSantis hired her a few months later. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday, but said on Twitter that "I’m proud of the work I have done in Georgia, though that chapter of my life has closed long ago, I certainly learned a lot from it."

Pushaw isn't the only person in DeSantis' orbit to face pressure from the DOJ to register as a foreign agent.

Last month, the DOJ sued casino mogul Steve Wynn in an attempt to compel him to register as a foreign agent. Wynn, who contributed $100,000 to DeSantis' campaign, is accused by DOJ of acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China and lobbying former President Donald Trump on the country’s behalf.
