Reporting from Washington - Troubled by the rising jobless rate, President Obama and the Democratic majority in Congress are assembling a new jobs package that would devote billions of dollars to projects meant to put people back on payrolls in 2010 and keep them working.

Discussions over the scale of the bill are fluid, but lawmakers said the intent was to move swiftly and get a bill to Obama's desk as early as January.

Well spending packages haven't worked before, but maybe if we're really lucky it will this time. The problem is that the laws of economics tell us that this can't work, and will only lead to more problems. The government cannot create jobs. In trying to do so the government simply destroys real jobs, and creates more malinvestment.

Free the free market!

Didn't they already pass a $800+ billion "jobs" package, back last spring?

Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a better result.....

Apparently it wasn't big enough. We need to waste more money, obviously.

Is this an admission that the stimulus package failed, then?

I mean, that was supposed to create or save millions of jobs, so why would we need THIS bill?

Yup. They already did this.

The first porkulus bill was just that, pork, very little job creation. Also, anything the Govt provides as a job in the private sector is a temp fix. The job will be going away when the project is over then back to unemployment line. These idiots need to catch a clue and read a little history to see what works to create jobs and Govt ain't it folks.

You gotta hand it to the Libs. The first plan didn't work so what's the answer? Well you do it again!.Can anybody say stimulus plan #2. Still don't see anyone in the State run media being critical of the President on anything.

When are the Republicans going to offer their jobs package?

Interesting how the bulk of that will be spent in the few months leading up to next falls elections, and they are already at the trough for more.:eusa_shhh:

Hopefully the Republicans realize that government cannot create jobs. But I doubt it.

When FDR took office he injected money into infrastructure to create jobs and there is no question that people who had NO job before that point then had jobs. The economy steadily improved until 1937 when at the insistance of the republicans in congress FDR backed off and set to balenceing the budget. 1937-1938 economy was tanking after that and FDR resumed ccreating jobs with government spending on infrastructure and the economy rebounded. Then we enetered the war.

For those who want to deny any of this please go study the FACTS

Great Depression in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Another response to the 1937 deepening of the Great Depression had more tangible results. Ignoring the pleas of the Treasury Department, Roosevelt embarked on an antidote to the depression, reluctantly abandoning his efforts to balance the budget and launching a $5 billion spending program in the spring of 1938, in an effort to increase mass purchasing power. Business-oriented observers explained the recession and recovery in very different terms from the Keynesians. They argued the New Deal had been very hostile to business expansion in 1935–37, had encouraged massive strikes which had a negative impact on major industries such as automobiles, and had threatened massive anti-trust legal attacks on big corporations. All those threats diminished sharply after 1938. For example, the antitrust efforts fizzled out without major cases. The CIO and AFL unions started battling each other more than corporations, and tax policy became more favorable to long-term growth

When are we going to see that Republican Jobs package?

Don't they have anything to contribute?
