CNN even went out of its way to silence any conservative guests who tried to bring up that story on their network this weekend.

No. Northam, Fairfax, Herring and the Virginia Democratic Party had a bad week. The rest of us just laughed,

As far as I'm concerned it's a local problem.

Nobody should be shocked that older folks in a place like Virginia have a history that isn't terribly clean when it come to racism. Don't get me wrong, it was bad then and it's bad now but times were different then and these awful things were still socially acceptable in some of the more backwards places like the American south. They're learning, and it's a process.
