Democrats Announce Hearing On Trump’s Tax Returns

Democrats will hold the hearing instead of just trying to obtain the documents.

The secrecy of President Donald Trump’s tax returns will be the subject of a hearing next week, Democrats in the House of Representatives announced Thursday.

Democrats have had the power to request Trump’s tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service since they assumed control of the House this year, but they’ve hesitated. To build the public case for disclosure, the House tax committee’s oversight panel will examine its authority to obtain the president’s tax returns at a Feb. 7 hearing.

Trump was the first major presidential candidate in 40 years not to release tax returns, which would have revealed detailed information about his sources of income and how much tax he pays. Democrats vowed to get the returns themselves, but haven’t done it yet.

Pressure is building, with an ABC News/Washington Post poll showing a healthy majority of Americans support the move. Tax March, a coalition of liberal groups, has been pressuring Democrats to hurry up, and Democratic members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus have been getting antsy, too.

Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.), the chairman of the tax committee, has said he wants time “to lay out a case” for the move and that staffers drafting the request are doing it “methodically” and need time.

Trump’s tax returns could show whether he evaded taxes, as a blockbuster New York Times report alleged that he and his father, Fred Trump, did for decades in the 20th century. The returns could also provide information about the sources of financing and debt at his multi-billion dollar real estate business.

As part of the public case, Democrats introduced legislation by Reps. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) and Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) that would require presidential candidates to disclose 10 years of tax returns.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has hinted that he will not comply with the Democrats’ request, which could get tied up in court for months.

Well, sparky, if I ever run for president - I promise I will provide 10 years of my tax returns.

Why would you do that? Is there a law requiring a Presidential candidate or even a President to release his tax returns?

Voters have a right to know.

Actually you don't. Otherwise it wouldn't be a crime to leak or release someone else's tax returns.

I think they're also working on a bill somewhere, that requires all Presidential candidates to release several years of income tax returns.

The main reason for releasing income tax returns is to look for "conflicts of interest." We really don't care how much money someone made or what their tax liability is. What we don't want is President who has a lot of financial interest abroad, that can be held hostage by foreign countries, and able to influence a President on policy decisions. Most President's don't even own stock in individual companies because that in itself represents a conflict of interest.

And I'll never believe that any American bank would have loaned Trump another dollar bill have claiming bankruptcy on 4 casino's and burning banks to the tune of 900 million dollars. Someone is loaning him money--and it's definitely not American banks. Which brings us back to this thread on this board.

Sorry to piss in your cornbread, but the bill you're referring to would require the public release of such records by presidential and vice presidential candidates in future elections.

Of course Trump is running again in 2020, but don't look for the bill to grow wings and fly.

Don't bother. Rachael Maddow already broke the story that Trump actually pays millions in taxes.

"Otherwise it wouldn't be a crime to leak or release someone else's tax returns."

Typo. Sticky keys.

She only had a few pages - not the ones that would have shown foreign financial entanglements.

What "foreign financial entanglements"? Is this something you made up or something you're hoping for because the Mueller "investigation" is fizzling out?

Don't you think if there was some improprieties in Trump's finances, the IRS would have already been all over his ass?

Honestly, you people are like little children. You don't understand what "no" means.

Now go sit in the corner for a 5 minute time-out.

Well it will grow and fly in 2020 that's for damn certain. That's going to be when Trump loses the election and there are 24 Republican senate seats up for grabs.

There is no reason whatsoever that anyone, and I mean anyone running for elected office isn't required to release several years of income tax returns to look for conflicts of interest. There's too many crooks out there looking for public office positions to enrich their own personal financial gain.

There's millions of Republicans out there also, that are demanding to see Trump's income tax returns, don't kid yourself. They know he is the only President that has refused to release his, after promising on numerous occasions that he would.

You're definitely a newbee on this board. There used to be 100's of you on this board, now you're group is down to around 10, and if you didn't notice what happened in the 2018 midterm, there really is no hope for you.

Trump won the election on an accumulated vote total of a mere 76K votes coming out of 3 blue rust belt states, while losing the popular vote by 3 million. Those 3 blue rust states won't be doing that again. Everyone knows now that he had a lot of help from Vladimir Putin, that fills the media attention every day and night, with the exception of FOX NEWS of course. This makes Trump the most illegitimate President ever to be sworn into the Oval office.

Trump is going to go down in a firestorm, and he's going to take the entire Republican party with him. It's estimated that 10 to 15 million Republicans have left the party since he has been elected. Meaning that the Republican party is now the minority party in this country.

There are millions of very regretful Republicans out there that have absolutely no intentions of voting for him again.

There is no justification for releasing Trump's return. Sifting for dirt is not a valid justification, and the Democrats know it. They are trying to provide themselves with political cover, but it isn't going to work. Furthermore, the IRS reports to Trump. It will be interesting to see them flout Trump's authority.

Well, slow but sure - hopefully. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin will likely be forced to turn them over. What do you think?

Do Russian oligarchs own Trump and his empire?

So yes the Ways & Means committee in the House, now has the authority to get Trump's income tax returns, something that Republicans refused to do.
Republicans Pass on Chance to Get Trump's Tax Returns - The Atlantic

Sorry to piss in your cornbread, but the bill you're referring to would require the public release of such records by presidential and vice presidential candidates in future elections.

Of course Trump is running again in 2020, but don't look for the bill to grow wings and fly.

Seriously? You don't even know what you're having for breakfast tomorrow morning, yet you're predicting Trump losing the election and Republicans losing 24 Senate seats?

Right, Nostradamus. Now tell me who's going to win the Super Bowl, so I can bet on the other team.

When Trump is gone what is left of the Republic will be gone and total Democracy will hasten the totalitarian government you so much want.

Trump would have released his tax data long ago, as opposed to a partial declaration, were it not damaging to him.

We're talkng about a wall street entity , aka>the swamp , that 1% faction of our society that has taken the rest of the 99% in America for everything it has to take, and basically owns Congress

Trump supporters wanted a 'wall street potus' , only to find themselves confronting their own congnitive dissonance screaming reality they're advocating their own economic demise
