That's what soldiers have to take into account, and we expect them to exercise discretion. This is one of the reasons why we prefer our presidents to have served in the military, so they understand the chain of command and the limits on the use of authority.

Yeah, no it isn't. It only protects the President against criminal prosecution for actions taken under his core powers granted specifically in the Constitution. To wit while the President is given command of the military, he can't order them to invade a country without approval from Congress. He certainly can't utilize the military to violate a citizen's rights ie kill them, (that would be an illegal order, one the person receiving it wouldn't be obliged to follow) though the argument can certainly be made that his processor did just that when he summarily executed a US citizen without trial. But of course, you're cool with that because the guy who did it wasn't Trump.
