Defining Conservatism

I don't know that it can be narrowly defined.

But suffice to say that a "conservative movement" is a contradiction in terms. To retard the course of human progress is conservative. But to drive human progress backward is something else; radical feudalism or fascism.

Old School Conservative : Fiscally responsible, Socially repressive.

What passes for Conservative today: Cut taxes and spend, spend, spend. Hatred of anything that is not white, Christian and straight
Are two parent families and marriage before children repressive? The media seems to think so.
"Social" Conservatism used to be defined as for traditional family values, and attending church.
"Fiscal" Conservatism used to be for a balanced budget and no wasteful spending.

Do you mean Conservative icon Donald John Trump who is on his third wife, cheated on them all, banged a porn star when Barron was an infant and had Tiffany out of wedlock?

There was a time when Conservatives used to define themselves as Family Values and Balanced Budgets

Somehow they call Trump Conservative

Can it be defined? Should it be defined?

"While I agree that conservatism is not, nor ever should be, a political label, I am far less certain that it should be loathed or dismissed so readily.

"I also fear that in this age of Trumpian populism and soft authoritarianism, conservatism is all too readily confused with populism."

If conservatism isn't a political label. what does it label?

Can it be defined? Should it be defined?

Shouldn’t the question be what fucking authoritarianism are you talking about? And populism means what? Wishing for your country to be taken care of first? That’s populism and somehow bad?

Support for the founding principals that made America a great nation. Fundamentals like work ethic, Christianity, moral values, and Family.

Basically... anything that the left actually standards for, as opposed to what they claim to stand for, is what Conservatives are against.

Opposition to anything new
yes...in the interest of conserving important traditions that define and preserve the continuity of our culture. Not necessarily a bad thing. The left is always pushing the boundaries of inclusiveness...the right, preserving them. Eventually the left’s “new” becomes that which is conserved.

We need both.

Opposition to anything new
The left hasn’t had a new thought in a hundred years. You just keep telling us every failed socialist country didn’t do it right. The truth is they did. The results are always the same.

That is ridiculous

Liberal innovations in the last hundred years

Womens rights
Civil rights
Environmental protection
Worker rights
Gay rights
Universal Healthcare
Social Programs

How does the election of Donald J Trump meet any of those criteria?
Conservatives sold out their values. I doubt they will ever get them back

I’m guessing you never heard of a guy named Bill Clinton.

Has Clinton ever claimed Family Values?
He cheated like crazy but is still on his first marriage and raised his own daughter. Something Trump never did

"Ask not what your country can do for you". JFK would have been a conservative today. The question is how to define today's "liberals" without including the word "Marxist".

Two things you never give a flying fuck about.

I have been married 39 years to a woman I cherish and raised two wonderful sons.
I have worked hard my whole life and retired with an above average lifestyle

You misinterpret JFKs statement.

JFK was advocating for his Peace Corps and public service
He also advocated for welfare in the same speech

JFK supported Universal Healthcare, Social Programs and Civil Rights
Does that make him conservative?
