Since Joe Biteme took office 11 million diseased illegals came across the southern border bringing drugs, guns and crime with them. All of a sudden on election year, and Joe Biteme's poll numbers tanking like a Russian Nuclear Submarine, the Marxists/Demofascists suddenly want the border closed. Or.....rather, Joe needed the passage of a bipartisan bill in order to amend the law. He can't simply wave his hand and do it, because he's president. As much as you would like it, a US president isn't a dictator.

Trump's policy still allowed migrants to come, cross the border in order to claim asylum and then sent back to mexico to wait. Any border town in mexico would be overrun by now and Mexico would in all likelihood end the agreement with the US. The new bill would have shut down the border for 45 days and deported everyone attempting to claim asylum once 5000 encounters per day were reached over 7 days, or 8500 encounters in one day. Once opened again and if 8500 encounters are reached everyone is immediately deported again and the border is shut down again for another 45 days and on and on. This effectively closes the border more or less. Catch and release is ended as well. There are also stricter requirements for who can claim asylum. But....republicans want open borders.
