Looks like you may be mistaken concerning the pilot......... Looks like the P-63 pilot may have hit a drone first.

The NTSB has released its preliminary findings. The fighter did not hit a drone. It was following the air boss's orders to change flying "lanes". Turns out the air boss was brand new and never did this before.
Like Juan points out, at Reno it is not legal to pass an airplane on the inside. You HAVE to pass it on the outside. Why? Because when you go wings up to another plane, you can't see it anymore.
The guy in the P63 was following orders and never saw the B17 until he hit it.
