Over the past few months, D. Trump has repeatedly spoken out about the responsibility of the Ukrainian side for the current crisis (see the quotes below):
"You (Ukrainians) should have never started it." see here.
“Listen, when you start a war, you gotta know that you can win the war, right? You don’t start a war with someone who’s 20 times your size and then hope people give you some missiles.” see here.
And finally, at the end of last week, in an interview with TIME magazine, D. Trump named a specific reason for the start of the war; see below the quote from the TIME website:

And finally, at the end of last week, in an interview with TIME magazine, D. Trump named a specific reason for the start of the war; see below the quote from the TIME website:
TIME: Should Ukraine give up any hope of ever joining NATO?
D. Trump: I don't think they'll ever be able to join NATO. I think that's been—from day one, I think that's been … what caused the war to start was when they started talking about joining NATO.
Before the start of the Russian Special Military Operation in Ukraine, the Russian government demanded guarantees from the West that Ukraine would not be accepted into NATO.
The leaders of Western countries then responded that Ukraine is an independent country and must decide for itself what it should join or not join.
However, when Soviet missiles were deployed on the territory of the independent country of Cuba in 1962, US President D. Kennedy declared that these missiles had been deployed too close to US territory. Therefore, D. Kennedy ordered US warships to blockade Cuba, which was a gross violation of international law, since a blockade may only be carried out against states that are at war with each other.
Therefore, N. S. Khrushchev, the then leader of the USSR (former head of the Communist Party of Ukraine, married to a Ukrainian woman) ordered the Soviet naval forces to ensure the passage of Soviet ships to Cuba.
Thus, in 1962, due to the deployment of Soviet missiles in Cuba, the USA and the USSR (at the initiative of the Americans) were on the brink of war, which could well turn into a nuclear war. But then the Soviet government agreed to remove its missiles from Cuba.
In my opinion, the situation with the preparation of Ukraine's entry into NATO is very similar to the deployment of missiles in Cuba in the 1960s.
The US then objected to the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba, and Russia now objects to NATO missiles in Ukraine.
P.S.
The picture at the top of this message is a photo of the Prime Minister of the USSR N.S. Khrushchev and the President of the USA D. Kennedy.
