They're already well versed in the art of suspension of disbelief.

I have no trouble reconciling the link between religiosity and general credulity (at best) or motivated ignorance (at worst).

They are being told to act this way though. And there has to be a motivation for wanting them to destroy themselves. Unless their Dear Leader actually thinks that the only people dying are those who are unproductive to "his" economy, and therefore expendable.

I find it quite heartening that the people who deny the existence of CVD19 are also those who are most likely to eventually contract it. Gives the Darwin fan in me a little thrill to see evolution in action.
