What is the metaphorical meaning of covering the inside of the ark with pitch?

Guessing: Make yourself impervious to the temptations of the devil and the world. Guard against the temptations of the flesh (outside) and don't let yourself be deceived mentally or spiritually (inside). Let the Water (Jesus Christ) take you to your destination.

"The Ark" could represent the Temple. We believers are the "Temple" of the Holy Spirit.

Thanks. What do you think the actual purpose was?

From a physical standpoint, "pitch" is simply a water repellant. By putting it on the inside and the outside of the ark, it assured that water wouldn't leak in and sink the vessel.

To keep the boat from sinking.

True. They didn't have Flex Seal back in those days. They didn't even have televisions that advertised Flex Seal, so they had to use whatever gooey shit they could find that oozed up from the ground.
