Russia has lost an estimated five men for every Ukrainian soldier its forces have killed in the battle for Bakhmut, according to a Nato official.

Speaking to CNN on condition of anonymity, the official said that Nato intelligence showed that Russia’s losses in the assault on the eastern salt-mining town far outweighed Ukraine’s.

The official also said, however, that Ukraine’s losses defending the city were significant.

Russia’s use of costly wave attacks have prompted comparisons to the First World War and the commander of the mercenary forces leading the assault has described the battle as a “meat grinder” for Russian troops.

Russia has been assaulting Bakhut since August, in what has become the longest and costliest battle of the war.

Re-read the article. The "fortified positions" are shelled until they collapse burying all the poorly trained conscripts in it. The Russians are applying a number of tactics, you can read it in the article. Wagner employs elite fighters, not mental people. And that happens while the Ukrainians have zero artillery support, zero air support, zero anything support.
And the point is that it is not some outsiders from the hostile side who claim that but the Ukrainian soldiers who stand in battle in Bakhmut.
That doesn´t mean the Russians don´t suffer casualties, they certainly have a considerable number of losses every day but everything contradicting these first hand reports, particularly super hero 1:5 kill/death ratios, is made up.

You've said nothing to change the fact that when an army attacks a fortified position it will suffer more casualties than the defenders. A trench is a fortified position, a foxhole is a fortified position and when you attack them, you can expect to have more casualties than he defenders. Artillery barrages have always preceded infantry attacks on fortified positions and still the attackers take more casualties than the defenders.
