My own thoughts about living in a society with so much belief in freedom is that people are going to eventually question traditional culture such as marriage. It is just the way free thinking is because there isn't a reason why some elements in tradition shouldn't be questioned. Why do have long standing taboos against homosexuality and other such things. This doesn't mean we would automatically throw out tradition because maybe some of those customs we inherit are actually healthy in society.
I think the mistake conservatives, particularly social conservatives, make is that they defend things like the sanctity of marriage based on tradition and tradition should be maintained for its own sake. That is the only argument they have and the problem with that is that we really don't know why certain things exist in society other than our forefathers before us did them so we do them to. These conservatives really don't make as good as argument for their position as 'liberals' do for theirs because they really don't think critically of tradition. I personally don't think they see a reason why traditions should be questioned which is why they don't think about their own position that often and, consequently, why they don't have a good argument for their defense of tradition other than it is just the way things are done.
I think 'liberals' are more motivated by a sense of social destruction because, in the eyes of socialist, modern society is really created by bourgeois elements in it. That is how they see it so everything that has anything to do with the maintenance of capitalist society has to be destroyed and that includes tradition since we inherit the capitalist creations from our fathers.
