China bans exports to US of gallium, germanium, antimony in response to chip sanctions proposed by Trump

BANGKOK (AP) — China announced Tuesday it is banning exports to the United States of gallium, germanium, antimony and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications, as a general principle.

The ratcheting up of trade restrictions comes as President-elect Donald Trump has been threatening to sharply raise tariffs on imports from China and other countries, potentially intensifying simmering tensions over trade and technology.

What are these high-tech materials and how much do we import of these from China?

The US relies on imports for 82% of its antimony demand, with China being the largest supplier at 63%. The US currently stockpiles only 1,100 tonnes (t) of antimony, although its consumption in 2023 was 23,000t.

Antimony has many uses, including:
  • Hardening lead
Antimony is a key ingredient in lead storage batteries, where it hardens the lead.

  • Flame retardant
Antimony oxide is used to make textiles, plastics, rubber, adhesives, pigments, and paper fire resistant.

  • Alloys
Antimony is mixed with other metals to create alloys used in solder, sheet and pipe metal, motor bearings, castings, and pewter.

    • Electronics
Antimony is used in semiconductors, such as infrared detectors and diodes.
    • Military applications
Antimony is used in night vision goggles, explosive formulations, flares, nuclear weapons production, and infrared sensors.
    • Brake linings
Antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) is a component of brake linings.
    • Special glasses
Sodium antimonate, a compound containing antimony, is used in certain special glasses, mostly solar PV glass.
    • Fining agent
Antimony ions interact with oxygen to suppress the tendency of oxygen to form bubbles

    • We can now expect to see higher prices for the items than use Antimony and expect to see lower security as Antimony is used greatly in armed offense and defense products! All thanks to Trump!

Every thread you post is a blatant lie.

This is what the Chinese are protesting you filthy fucking liar. The Biden admin's chip sanctions, which were announced on Monday.

U.S. announces new export controls on China's chip industry

Buried in your pathetic little article:

China says it’s protecting itself from US trade restrictions

After the U.S. side announced it was adding 140 companies to a so-called “entity list” subject to strict export controls, China’s Commerce Ministry protested and said it would act to protect China’s “rights and interests.” Nearly all of the companies affected by Washington’s latest trade restrictions are based in China, though some are Chinese-owned businesses in Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

Both governments say their respective export controls are needed for national security.

China’s government has been frustrated by U.S. curbs on access to advanced processor chips and other technology on security grounds but had been cautious in retaliating, possibly to avoid disrupting China’s fledgling developers of chips, artificial intelligence and other technology.

Various Chinese industry associations issued statements protesting the U.S. move to limit access to advanced chip-making technology.

Don't care. Antimony is a metal that's also used for hardening bullets cast out of lead and tin. And I'm sitting on about 80 pounds of high antimony-content tin bars and another 50 pounds of linotype and monotype, which has a high antimony content. Not to mention the 250 pounds of pure lead I've accumulated.

I can cast enough bullets to last me a lifetime.

Cool, let China kill off 63% of this industry in their own country.

In this instance your report is as I read it a few days ago in Zero Hedge , and the key point is that in most instances it will take the US years to set up comparable supply lines and quantity production .
Such a move could be a real threat to the US in key areas.

But most of the old chaps here rely on fifth rate MSM for news and have no idea of the negative ramifications , whatever colour they paint their genitals .

Yes, but Biden did that and that was a strong response to what China has been doing. Which is a strong positive for Biden. Having said that, Trump will be making it even worse, which does mean more damage added to whatever damage Biden may be causing.

You are not a very smart person as you have to understand that Trump is making things worse, above whatever Biden has done.

OR Ukraine won't be getting the military materiel that they've come to rely on.

They are not buyers but sellers and selling such products that are needed by all nations, is not going to be difficult to achieve.

So they sell to another country who will inturn sell to the US?

That's the thing isn't it. You don't fuk around on trade relations with 'worthy' competitors!

And on top of that, there's going to be a lot of blowback from US industries over any tariffs.

What was Trump thinking?

Concerning Canada, there's going to be some whining over the pain imposed by Trump if he dares to follow through, or America's inductry lets him.

But Canada's big business won't whine for long before they search out and find new trading partners.

That's already been left festering for too long, even though there's been some diversification already.

What was Trump thinking?

No one cares. Gallium is 1940's technology. I haven't seen a cat whisker in forty years. Not even at the surplus store.

I absolutely love the responses so far given. It is so Trumper mentality that it is refreshing to be proven correct that Trumper are all useless and pieces of shit. All they can do (and I mean the best they can do) is to

Wonderful news.

If you did not want to be an American, you didn't belong here in the first place.
Sorry man, sick and tired of living in a country with declining quality of life, rising corruption, and no prospects for young people.
Why would America ever get the idea that it didn't have to play fair with China?
"American Exceptionalism." Literally an insane belief held by neo-cons and many neo-liberals that the US just...doesn't have to follow rules. It's just exempt from them because...it is.

Why wouldn't Biden poison the free trade pond, to leave Trump with big issues to deal with on China and Russia?

After Trump comes back to earth on the reality of fkng around with a more powerful China, it's a pretty safe bet that he will become the champion of free and fair trade.

And too with Russia, he's got Biden's clusterfk against Russia to use as a good example of picking a fight against countries that aren't third world pushovers!
