CHICAGO: A war of words with racial undertones marked the White House race yesterday after civil rights icon John Lewis accused Republican John McCain of sowing "hatred" against Barack Obama. McCain, who has been trying to tamp down abuse of the Democratic nominee at his campaign events, reacted furiously, lashing out against Lewis, who only a few weeks ago he described as one of the Americans he most admired.
The latest political turbulence came just over three weeks before the November 4 election, as the race tightened slightly, with Obama's lead over McCain narrowing to seven percentage points at the end of the past week, according to a Gallup tracking poll, after it climbed to as high as 52 per cent in mid-week.
McCain shifted a point to 43pc - his best showing in a week.
"As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Senator McCain and Governor Sarah Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all," Lewis said.
An all-consuming fire is a "holocaust," according to the dictionary definition.
In other words, McCain is Hitler.
And I thought he was an addle-brained amnesty supporter who never met a Democrat in the Senate he didn't like.
