McDonalds kept their coffee extremely hot. Not fit for human consumption hot, I believe was used at the trial. Many other people had been burned by it, some badly. One should expect to get their coffee hot, but I can understand not expecting it to be so hot that drinking it would cause severe damage, let alone serious burns in just a couple of seconds of skin contact.
