Why does the financial aid system allow or enable these situations to happen to people? There needs to be some part of the process that makes the student aware that the more they take out in loans, the more difficult to pay back. Did this Mr. Lopes assume all of this debt going two years to a local community college and then two years to an in-state university? Doubtful. He probably was sold a bill of goods that the same education was worth more at an out of state school or an out of state private university. This shit needs to stop.

While we are at it, trade schools assistance needs to be stepped up and small business loans need to be increased for these skilled workers looking to go into business for themselves.

The guy is from Brazil - a minority who could take advantage of affirmative action for scholarships and tuition assistance. What was his major, and why is he being reactive after he's already spent the money? When you're using financial aid, it shouldn't be a surprise to see your balance over time, and he should have taken advantage of eliciting information BEFORE he spent the money.

Government has ultimately increased the demand for education, and the corresponding financial assistance. The result: unsustainable costs that produce these results. Additionally, as more people get higher education, when a majority are educated, it lowers the value of having a degree. Now government wants to provide relief for the problem it created.

First of all .. $10K against a $146K debt is negligible. The expectation for others to contribute / cover his debt that he chose to accept for a degree providing little to no value is .. the perfect storm and self-induced.

A big part of the problem is entitlement. Students and their families feel they are better than the local community college and state school and feel compelled beyond reason to go to a school they cannot afford now nor in the future. That mindset needs to change..

He graduated with $100,000 in student loans? And now it’s $146,000?

1. Why didn’t he go to a community college for his first two years (total tuition around $10,000) and then a state university for his last two years (for a total of around $30,000) for a total debt of $40,000?

2. If he came from as poor a family as he says, he would have gotten Pell Grants, meaning his debt would have been only $20,000.

3. If he were college material, he would have aced community college and gotten a scholarship of around 1/3 to the state college, meaning his debt would have totaled only $10,000.

4. He decided instead to go directly to an expensive college, apparently won no academic scholarships, and now wants workers to pay off his loan?

5. He earns a five-figure salary? That could be $95,000 a year. Cry me a River.

Agreed to a point but much like financial controls and limits put in place for a mortgage, there needs to be some as well for school loans. Going to that private college three time zones away may seem more appealing and glamorous as opposed to going to the local community college for two years and the state university for two years but if you can get a degree in the same field at 1/4 of the price, then that is what your loan should be capped.
