I work in a very urban school district. A lot of the students are new arrivals to the country. Many live in very poor families. Some live with 'families' so identified as to have an address. Quite a few are outright homeless.

All the more reason why you should have some sort of activity for them when they are able to attend. For them, having a goal that is unrelated to their every day hardships is more important than many might realize.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. Of course there are different activities. Those you coach have chosen athletics, and another activity might not have the same importance to them as what you do with them. I have no doubt that you already know that. Mine was just a superfluous remark on the situation.
