The change in greetings from fifty years ago became noticeable within a decade and then advanced. it was like you were not allowed to say it in stores and growing in public settings. The City I was from half the students went to Parochial School up until the early 1970's. Those schools started to close around the same time Merry Christmas started to go to Happy Holidays.
