China halts export of rare earthes

Maybe that's why Trump wants Greenland.
Yeah, no doubt that's a part of it. It will take years, of course, to create the requisite mining facilities and processing plants.

This isn't good. Short term this would hurt a few of our industries, like tech, green, defense, industrials.

The trade war continues as China stops export of several rare earthes globally.

Could China bring down the entire West this way?
There's nothing 'rare' about 'Rare Earth'. It's just messy and nasty to mine.

^ Rooting for the CCP!

Truly the thoughts of an "Independent" openly embracing his Inner Mao
dimocrap scum ALWAYS cheer for anybody and anything that hurts or hates America.

Not throwing spitballs. It is fact. They HATE America and they especially hate Americans.

Just read what they're saying and you can draw no other conclusion.

Rare earths are not rare. They're in fact quite common. The ones that we use the most are as common as copper or lead, and in fact you can find them on every continent, and on the ocean floor, and they're also in our technologies around us.

Mining is only months from producing at scale the deposits needed. The rare earth's exist everywhere from coal ash (huge deposits buried everywhere that were not turned into drywall boards) to other coal mines and in the Rockies and the sea bed.

The deposits are everywhere.
The refining at scale? There's the problem.
That could take 12 months to two years.

But it can happen and usually with better purity than what China produces them at PLUS with less environmental impact.

It is heavy industry so we need to keep these facilities away from population centers. Ongoing Safety is a HUGE concern for these types of facilities. Leaks, fires, explosions, noxious gas releases.

Here's the problem for China with "bringing down the West." The countries comprising the West are the ones most of China's consumer goods are exported to. Hurting those country's ability to purchase Chinese goods hurts China.

That fact may be about the only saving grace with respect to its ownership of so much of our debt. It could do significant harm to the US should it stop buying and or start selling the debt they hold. It would cause US bond yields to rise, making the issuance of future debt more expensive for us by having to pay a higher interest rate.

But if China breaks us, it essentially breaks itself. Therefore, the Right's hated global economy may be the only thing saving the US from China pulling the proverbial rug out from under us.

Great.

They have several strings they can pull, and evidently our "leaders" don't know that.

What a shock.
don't they get money for those? so they will go without revenue. Interesting you think that will bring everyone else down. Only you dude. hilarious.

:clap2: :clap2::clap2::clap2:

Tell ole Mac that.

The old fool wouldn't get it
there's ole mac, cut off all incoming money and we'll be just fine. They live off foreign money. The slave labor don't pay taxes. Why else does he think they set up all this foreign shit?

Great.

The US needs to decide carefully if it wants to trade with China. Then it needs to trade and act strategically with that purpose.

Well, there will be no turning on a dime here. Both countries are just too important to each other right now.

My two concerns are (a) a bond market that is a couple of shocks away from a far worse collapse, and (b) the fact that our former friends are done with us and sniffing around at new options and alliances. Over time that dimishes us even more than we already are.

If Xi gets the upper hand here, we could have some real problems. The best Trump can hope for is complete capitulation, which would -- at best -- make a marginal difference in the lives of Americans. At GREAT fucking cost. I don't know what the rubes think this is going to do for their everyday lives, but it's too late to worry about that now. What's done is done.

REEs (Rare Earth Element) are only used because they are cheap. That doesn't mean that there are not alternatives.

These REEs magnets all have various properties that we like....mostly remaining magnetic under temperature or environmental extremes.
That doesn't mean that we can't achieve the same effects in other ways. Or that we can't engineer around REEs.
We can dope magnets with other chemicals to achieve similar effects....they cost more. But if it's what is necessary....guess what?

Lithium and it's ionic structures are currently behind most of the current cheap battery technologies. If we get away from using lithium....guess what?
Lithium so far to date is the cheapest vx watt/hr per ounce solution we have. It's not the only solution to stored energy. It uses REEs as well on the cathode and annode terminals until the Lithium cracks.

So....
There ARE alternatives that can be used. Plans have BEEN already made for this undesired eventuality....
But
Whining is free. And if we can get enough people to whine....maybe the big corporate giants won't have to spend money on something other than their bonuses.

how could Xi? Trump has the globe. Xi does anything here, they will retaliate. EU is already upset with Xi. so tell us how Xi has the upper hand?

Be prepared for more mines in America. It should be illuminating to see where they’re allowed to mine. In the past places of natural beauty were off limits, but under a Trump regime it’s likely the only verboten spots will be the areas inhabited by the 1%.
