Second, it will take a while to get manufacturing up even if we wanted to. For the next couple of years, China has advantage in the rare earths market.

I think they will be mining very soon. It doesn't take that long for a mining operation to get up and running. And the need for it will expedite the process. It should keep us going until the next lode is discovered.

At the scales we're talking about, it takes years. They're still awarding research grants to determine the actual size of rare earth deposits and their location with test drilling....with funding less than $5 million. They are nowhere near industrial level extraction.

At the largest site, the Halleck Creek Project, as of late last year......they had 23 test holes drilled for a grand total of less than 3000m of bore, most of them being about 12" inches in diameter

23 at 12 INCHES across on average.

Industrial mining is years and years away.

Rare earth imports from China are generally high purity, often exceeding 99.9% for most applications, according to a USITC report.

Most rare earth applications require at least 99.9% purity, and China's imports often meet or exceed this standard, states a USITC report.

But 0.3% purity by volume. So we'd have to do all the processing too.

Its totally doable. And in the absence of Chinese imports, plausible. It will just take time. And will likely cost us more than we could import it for.

Take Cobalt. We have a mine in the US. But it closed almost as soon as it opened because its not economically viable to mine domestically until the price per pound is well in excess of $20.

Its currently at around $15 on the open market. So we will have to invest heavily to get a mining and refining infrastructure up, including all the opportunity cost of how those funds could have been used elsewhere. Then pay more per pound than we could buy on the open market if we hadn't started a trade war.

It can be done. But not easily. And not quickly.
