Caroline Kennedy as Ambassador to Japan

Caroline Kennedy may not be a moron, but she's certainly politically involved. Granddaddy amassed a fortune in bootlegging, became powerful and someone probably did owe him and pay him with an Ambassadorship. Granddaddy's children were all groomed to be politicians.

Maybe it has less to do with politics than marital problems that need to have a lid kept on them? None of the Kennedy's seem to have been able to fare too well in that arena.

Ah, the biggest Kennedy myth.

The facts of Kennedy’s life (that he was rich; that he was in the liquor business; that he was deeply unpopular and widely distrusted) were rich loam for a rumor that did not begin to blossom until nearly 30 years after Repeal. Three times during the 1930s, Kennedy was appointed to federal positions requiring Senate confirmation (chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, chairman of the U.S. Maritime Commission, Ambassador to Great Britain). At a time when the memory of Prohibition was vivid and the passions it inflamed still smoldered, no one seemed to think Joe Kennedy had been a bootlegger—not the Republicans, not the anti-Roosevelt Democrats, not remnant Klansmen or anti-Irish Boston Brahmins or cynical newsmen or resentful Dry leaders still seething from the humiliation of Repeal. There’s nothing in the Senate record that suggests anyone brought up the bootlegging charge; there’s nothing about it in the press coverage that appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, or The Boston Globe. There was nothing asserting, suggesting, or hinting at bootlegging in the Roosevelt-hating Chicago Tribune, or in the long-dry Los Angeles Times. Around the time of his three Senate confirmations, the last of them concluding barely four years after Repeal, there was some murmuring about Kennedy’s involvement in possible stock-manipulation schemes, and a possible conflict of interest. But about involvement in the illegal liquor trade, there was nothing at all. With Prohibition fresh in the national mind, when a hint of illegal behavior would have been dearly prized by the president’s enemies or Kennedy’s own, there wasn’t even a whisper.

Joseph P. Kennedy was the ambitious son of a prosperous Boston saloon keeper and ward boss. He married the mayor's daughter, went to Harvard, and generally made the most of his ample connections and talent. He ran a bank (admittedly two-bit) at 25, and was number-two man at a shipyard with more than 2,000 workers during World War I. At 30 he became a stockbroker and made a fortune through insider trading and stock manipulation. He was a master of the stock pool, a then-legal stunt in which a few traders conspired to inflate a stock's price, selling out just before the bubble burst.

Kennedy may also have traded in illegal booze, although the evidence is circumstantial. His father had been in the liquor business before Prohibition, and Joe himself got into it (publicly, that is) immediately after repeal. Some believe the family business simply went underground during the dry years. He may have been strictly a nickle-and-dimer; Harvard classmates say he supplied the illicit booze for alumni events.

But there might have been more to it than that. In 1973 mob boss Frank Costello said he and Kennedy had been bootlegging partners. Other underworld figures have also claimed Joe was in pretty deep. At least one writer (Davis, 1984) thinks bootlegging enabled Joe to earn his initial financial stake, but that's hard to believe; he had plenty of chances to make money more or less legally.

The Straight Dope: What is the true source of the Kennedy family's wealth?

FDR had PLENTY of enemies, and so did Kennedy. Yet he made it through Senate confirmation...THREE TIMES.

Jackie raised those kids. She was extremely protective of their privacy. Most of the pictures you see of Caroline and John John during the White House years were because the President went against her wishes when she was away from them. And she was not crazy about the troubles other Kennedy nieces and nephews were getting into. But after Bobby was assassinated, she wanted OUT of this country.

In June 1968, when her brother-in-law Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated, she came to fear for her life and those of her children, saying: "If they're killing Kennedys, then my children are targets ... I want to get out of this country." On October 20, 1968, she married Aristotle Socrates Onassis, a wealthy Greek shipping magnate, who was able to provide the privacy and security she sought for herself and her children. - wiki

If the people of Japan welcome her, that's all that matters. The Kennedy name is revered in Japan..

A) No, that is obviously not all that matters.

B) The Kennedy name is recognized by many people in Japan, not "revered."

Caroline Kennedy is not a moron. She is not a politician.

I am afraid she is a moron...when they trotted her out as a NY Senatorial candidate she was forced to open her mouth.

It was not pretty and she subsequently pulled out of the election.

No, she is not a moron. She is not a politician. She is an author and a lawyer with a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School, graduating in the top ten percent of her class.

YOU are a moron.

She's definitely a political operative, she was a key member of the Obama 2008 campaign. As to her intelligence, it's hard to say. She's never done much other than be a figurehead for her family's causes. Given the subjective nature of law school grading, it's hard to find any professor that wouldn't give a Kennedy "royal" bad grades so she's at least smart enough to show up. There are plenty of signs the point to her being a lightweight:

Um, you know: How Caroline Kennedy botched her debut TV interview | Mail Online

She has nothing in her resume that qualifies her to be an Ambassador.

LOL, um sure dad....but she is still a moron.

Then you are proof of the old axiom: 'it takes one to know one'

LOL.

Now I get it, a Kenndy true believer.

She is no more than a hood ornament.

You probably don't believe Teddy was a raging alcoholic either ;)

How embarrassing.
Having a Japanese Ambassador who says "you know" with every other word.
They should make it illegal for Presidents to appoint Ambassadors because of their huge amounts of money to political parties.

Our relationship with Japan has been pretty much in Maintenance Mode for a very, very long time.

The two peoples and nations have long-since become fast friends.

I am having difficulty believing that Kennedy can screw that up, without actually going out of her way to do so, and I don't see that as likely.

It's an Election Plum, alright, but candidates in both parties do that, once they're elected and in-power and in a position to grant such appointments...

So long as our State Department and the Japanese Foreign Ministry believe that she can competently serve as a Front (Wo)Man for our puposes, there's probably very litte risk associated with letting her take a crack at it.

Everybody's gotta start someplace, and she has some half-way -decent -looking Rookie Credentials to get started with.

What the hell... give her a shot.

If she screws it up, we can recall her, and touch-up the paint (repair whatever minor damage she might have inflicted).

But my own personal spidey-sense tells me that she'll probably do just fine with this, on our behalf.

Hey pea brain, you had to edit/cut out this part of my post to reply. READ IT...

Opinion: Why Caroline Kennedy is a good pick for Japan post - CNN.com

It turns out the Kennedy family has an important legacy in U.S.-Japan relations. Kennedy's father and uncle, John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, played important roles in transforming a troubled U.S.-Japan military alliance into the robust relationship the two countries enjoy today.

I didn't "have to" do anything. I set you straight as an act of kindness. You're welcome.

Expertise in Japan and North Asia? Nope.
Speaks Japanese? Nope.
Experience in international diplomacy? Nope.
Experience holding any political position? Nope.

Obama owes her a favor for election support? Yup.

What a stupid choice for this post, I hate the culture of back scratching that leads to appointments of unqualified people, and that our President adheres to it.

All she has to do is go to dinner parties, look pretty and be a kennedy.

it's not like it's going to be hard or is anything important.

hell we still have ambasadors for england, Ireland, spain, etc, etc..

Quite true, Ambaasadorial post have traditionally been paybacks.

Kennedy is a moron, but thats why she would get a Post like japan, they are a staunch ally and she will be nothing more than an Ornament for Social functions.
