It's the references to the Nephilim in the Bible (The Nephalem in the game) that draw me. The eternal battle between heaven and hell. Lots of religious invocation going on that I like.

Yeah, the Bible says to not let yourself be consumed by the world. So a game is just a game so long as you don't let it influence your relationship with Christ.
