Can poor folk still get medicaid or is it medicare ?

Its a worry Sue. The service was virtually destroyed by the CONSERBATIVE govt. Now it is being rebuilt. I must say I am quite pleased with the service I have paid for over the years.

But like healthcare in the US it is always vulnerable to right wing wreckers.

We have layer upon layer of insurances in the US. We have medicare for the elderly and disabled mostly but they increasingly buy supplemental policies out of pocket to pick up all the stuff medicare sticks you still owing. I believe there are some who can get both medicare and medicaid. Medicaid is the poor people insurance. Medicaid is largely paid for with federal money but run by the respective states so there is not a lot of uniformity about it. On top of that is the ACA "Obamacare stuff". Now the problem with that has always been that the democrats purposefully designed it with a gap for the working poor where millions were ineligible for medicaid or the Obamacare coverage. It was the thing McCain tried to address with Obama at the healthcare summit when Obama got all "Election's over. I won" with him. To make matters worse, they temporarily removed the income caps on the Obamacare policies but those are about to expire as well (maybe next year) so even middle class folks who are now getting their insurance through the marketplace may not be able to afford it when it does because they will get no premium subsidy but their employers have already dumped them onto the marketplace where the policies are quite expensive without the subsidy. My wife and I make good enough money but with 3 kids still on our policy, we pay a freaking mint on health insurance. I am not sure some people are prepared for what is about to hit them if and when those income caps are put back into place. With what we pay in health insurance and car insurance every month, we could afford a pretty decent sized house payment should we otherwise decide to move.

It sounds byzantine. Another burden for sick people to negotiate.
