Can people ever be united?

I like people. I respect them. I admire them. I’m proud of how far we’ve come, through adversity, impossible odds, and countless challenges. But sometimes it feels like we fail to see our connectedness. We’ve learned to fear, distrust, and even hate each other. The thing is, your enemy isn’t inherently evil. They just grew up in and understood a different world than you did. So I wonder, can this ever be repaired? Are we doomed to division and hatred, or is it still possible for humanity to unite, to discover our shared bonds?
IMO, it depends on whether people can agree on a commonly accepted set of facts. In the past there were philosophical differences on many issues based on differences of opinion. On government, public safety, education, etc. We largely got along.

Today, we can't agree on what to do about climate change because some think it's a hoax. We can't agree on how to conduct elections because some think the system is rife with fraud. Fact based evidence has been replaced with belief.
