Recognizing civil unions for legal reasons would have been sufficient, but the Left wanted to degrade the institution of marriage.

The States set the marriage contract conditions, If they want to legalize SSM it's up to them.

All the feds should have done is enforce Full faith and credit, but they decided to just make stuff up like the did with Plessey, Roe and Chevron.

THIS is how you compromise, something the left has decided they don't need to do anymore.
