Can one retire without informing the employer?

He and his wife of 23 years just split and divorced. We are thankful for that. No kids invved so it was a good thing.

Is this a law? I'm talking to my son about it. He is 54. Ready to call it quits.

If his company offers any type of retirement benefits (pension, insurance coverage, alumni organizations, etc.) they will have a process they need to follow to convert him from an employee to a retiree.

Source: I work in HR.

Yep, so I told him to contact hr without telling his manager. The manager is not a good person.

Company treated him well. But that is never a reason to treat the company well in return.

2 weeks? He doesn't owe them one day notice in reality. But it's up to him.

Depends if he wants to go out with a nice Retirement Party or just pack up and leave.

Best to see how others were treated when they retired

Giving months notice of an impending retirement means you will be treated differently than in the past.

As far as giving notice, one must also ask if the company gives notice when an employee is to be separated for any reason or if they give a severance package. My thought is you should give notice when you plan to leave, but it's really not fair if the company can then cut you loose with no notice and no compensation. IOW, a 2-week paycheck would seem fair if they expect you to give a 2 week notice when you leave. Simply not attending a meeting where you are expected to be, especially if your contribution is important is a good way to burn bridges, bridges you may want to cross back over. You may find out that being retired isn't always all that great.

Let's be realistic, retiring at 54 without a LOT of money is a risky thing to do.

I always consider how I would want to be treated in making any decisions.
If I owned a company would I want someone to give me a chance to hire someone to fill that position or would I want some one to leave me in a lurch? I would hope that someone would be enough of an individual to give me a heads up so I could at least start looking for a replacement.
But in todays world individuals with ethics are becoming harder to find

Retirement needs to be announced to HR to receive benefits.

BUT....
A manager can fire you in some companies and it will erase any pension you might otherwise be entitled to. Tyson was notorious for that. My grandfather was fired within a month of his announcement (6 month notice) and he lost ALL of his pension as a result.

Not in the work world. It's dog eat dog.

You make it sound as if he owes the emoyer a thanks or something. That's kind of warped.

Well no ... that's not how dogs behave ... the company should be giving thanks if the dog up and quit ... good riddence to bad rubbish as they say in the Old Country ...

When the wife retired from FEMA she worked it all out with HR at the DC HQ.....They were all working from home at the time.

On her last day she simply gathered-up the FEMA issued equipment and took it to the FEMA location about 20 miles away, had it signed for, and that was it.....She did not inform her immediate management.

You seem to think workers should be nice to bad managers. Why?

Corporations have created the lack of ethics. It's 100 percent created by the corporate heads. Workers are just displaying what the managers instill.

That should be illegal. That is called a company mistreating an employee. Ones pension should not be stripped away because the company chooses to break its contracts. He should have taken them to court.

The worst day of retirement beats the greatest day at work. He already has an offer from another place for part time and from home which he greatly desires. He may grab a few hours per week. Why work longer if one doesn't need to? He has plenty of money. That's not an issue. Wr don't need people working longer. It hurts businesses.

So if someone drives into your driveway you feel you need to park in their garage?
Not all are unethical. I have worked for a number that are not what you claim so I wonder if you might have found a few and think they are all like that.
I have never been someone that feels a need to get back or even with others

I agree....he should have BUT this is Georgia where the courts are NOT known for integrity.

Corporations have it easy finding good dedicated overperforming employees. The labor force is abundant with them.

Yeah the reason he and his wife split is related to that. She wanted to move south. He doesn't want to live in the south. So there was no compromise. They were very amicable about it and have maintained they still care for each other. But he wasn't going to move. We are happy it turned out this way.

They never really argued much so it caught us by surprise but many marriages end in divorce so there's no loss.
