Actually, I think Pence is too far right to win a General Election. I said the same about Cruz and I maintain this position today.
I think Cruz would have beaten Hillary legitimately.
The thing is, the GOP is going to get at least 45% of the vote no matter what. Had Cruz been the candidate, a lot of people who voted for either Johnson or McCollough would have voted for him. He might have even tipped MN and NH into the GOP column.
Part of the problem was Hillary was such an awful candidate,and I say that as someone who voted for her. I wouldn't have voted for Cruz, either. Might have voted for Kasich. Might have voted for Jeb if his name wasn't Bush. Might have voted for Scott Walker.
The other part of the problem is that after 8 years of a given party, people are usually ready for a change, even if things are going well. We saw that with Obama, we saw that with Bush. Dukakis might have won in 1988 if he weren't such a truly awful candidate.
Now that said, the problem with Trump is that he should have been a non-starter. But he wasn't because the GOP was desperate for a win.
