The Old Testament is and was the foundation from what became the New Testament. IOW, you can't have one without the other

New Testament = Grace

You can't be given Gods Grace, if you don't have or know the Law that you've broken

For our religion or form of government to play a role in saving us and our civilization, they need to change. Both Christianity and the American democracy have proved inadequate as we presently understand them to protect us.

In order for Christianity to regain its nourishing force, for example, it will be necessary—at the very least—to jettison the Old Testament (along with its primitive, bloodthirsty, tribal deity) and accept that just because something is “written” doesn’t mean that it’s inviolable. There are no magic books, even if we call them “sacred.”

I read this as Judaism at one point included child sacrifice. How am I reading this incorrectly?

I love how Christians tie themselves into knots trying to excuse the filth in the Old Testament, which openly calls for their actual extermination. So breathtakingly ignorant and stupid.

It is the history of mankind. Old Testament prophesy was fulfilled in the NT. Genesis is a lesson in physics. Jesus came to fulfill the Law. < found in the OT. It is all relevant. The saying goes:
"The new is in the old concealed; the old is in the new revealed" And that is true.
When Jesus referred to Jonah, or Job, or various Kings, we wouldn't understand what He was talking about if we hadn't read about them in the OT. The Old Testament is the foundation for the New Testament.

And, stop blaming God for our screw-ups. God's idea for us was to create a beautiful garden, with everything already done for us. No thorns on roses, no pain in childbirth, ground that you don't have to till. Fruit on the vine that didn't need pruning. God creating funny animals to name. Everything a spoiled child could wish for. Lots of joy. That's God's intention for His children.
The rest of the Book is God having to deal with the horrendous messes men make. There was no war in the Garden of Eden. No one was burning babies. None of that is God. That is us. And God, loving Father that He is, ( and who warned us about Satan in the OT ) blames Satan for our downfall. And then came here and died to remove everything that could keep us from Him. That God loves you enough to die for you. And to give you your salvation as a gift. And He just waits and waits and waits for you to talk to Him.

Apparently you missed the whole point of the Old Testament. It contains as many as 574 verses that are prophesies of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

there is no claim from jesus such claims made by the crucifiers are theirs. the 1st century events are the repudiation of judaism, their false commandments, hereditary idolatry religion of apartheid - of which a messiah is itself a false belief made through selfishness for those who do claim the aberration to be true.

the 1st century is the reawakening of the original religion of antiquity and a period of liberation theology, self determination as taught by jesus and is the beliefs of those as jesus who gave their lives for their heavenly quest.
